After acts of domestic violence, hospitals do not just offer medical treatment to the (usually female) victims. The hospital staff also secures evidence so that the (mostly male) perpetrators can be prosecuted. And above all, the victims are also given advice. “We are usually the first point of contact and inform the victims about offers of help,” says Maria Fitzinger. “If requested, we can also establish initial contact with victim protection organizations such as the women’s shelter.”

Maria Fitzinger is head of the victim protection group that was founded ten years ago at the Salzkammergut Clinic in Vöcklabruck. How important this institution is has since become clear. More than 470 victims sought the help of the clinic’s experts after experiencing domestic violence. The latter often experience women downplaying injuries or faking accidents out of fear. “We then encourage women to seek help and thus take the first step out of the spiral of violence,” says Fitzinger.
