The children at the Pergkirchen elementary school (Perg district) proved to be eager and persistent climate protectors. They did without the school bus and parents’ taxi for a week and walked to school accompanied by their class teachers. The 81 students collected 2,049 climate miles – more than any other school in Austria.

As a prize for their commitment, the third and fourth grade students were invited to Vienna last week by Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler and Climate Alliance Managing Director Elke Kastner and were personally awarded a certificate and a trophy. At the ceremony in the “Climate Lab”, Gewessler emphasized both the importance of climate protection and how important it is for young people to get involved and take responsibility for our environment. The children from Pergkirchen did this in an exemplary manner.

Before the award ceremony, the two classes were invited on a tour of Schönbrunn Zoo. The arrival and departure of the elementary school children was provided by the Austrian Postbus AG.

The young award winners had also prepared something for the ceremony: They recited a climate protection poem for Federal Minister Gewessler and Climate Alliance Managing Director Kastner and, accompanied on the guitar by their director Georgine Wagner, sang a song entitled “Hoi, hoi, in the school, gemma z’Fuaß, gemma z’Fuaß”.
