For a coffee chat with the police

“When you talk, people come together,” says Günther Humer, deputy head of the state police department. This also applies to the police: In the “Together Safe” initiative, police officers across the country will be answering questions from the public in the coming weeks. The “Coffee with Cops” campaign is about “dialogue at eye level with the population,” says Humer. Informal and personal conversations between citizens and officials are intended to increase trust in law enforcement. In front of municipal offices, at weekly markets or even in shopping centers, there is an opportunity to talk to police officers outside of a traffic stop. Regional security problems, cybercrime or general questions about the police profession can be discussed with the officers over coffee.

However, the Austrian police do not have to worry about a good relationship with citizens: the OGM trust index published last week shows that no other institution in Austria is trusted as much as the police.
