As The Times newspaper reported on Monday, a neurology department in Liverpool paid a total of £7,853 (currently €9,083.02) for a shift of indefinite duration in June.
In July, a 13-hour shift in general surgery in Kent, southeast England, cost £6,247, with several clinics spending more than £3,000 per shift. By the beginning of August, the costs for strike shifts totaled more than a billion pounds.
The chronically underfunded and understaffed NHS (National Health Service) has been repeatedly rocked by waves of strikes for months, contributing to the historically high backlog of surgical appointments. Doctors from all areas are demanding significantly higher wages and better conditions.
On Monday, specialists and assistant doctors stopped work again for three days. The unions rejected an offer based on a recommendation from an independent commission as too low. There are currently no new negotiations in sight.
