The French president called for calm in the face of a violent anti-vaccine revolt in Guadeloupe

A protest movement against the obligation of health and care personnel to be vaccinated, which became a social crisis aggravated by numerous incidents that have already lasted a week, shakes this French island of the Antilles, where the Government sent reinforcements to restore the order.

The Executive sent 200 policemen and gendarmes, as well as 40 members of elite units, which brought the deployed troops to 2,250.

“There is a situation that is very explosive and that is linked to a very local context, to tensions that we already know are historical,” said Macron, who claimed “not to give in to lies and manipulation.”, as reported by news agencies AFP and ANSA.

The incidents, marked by the erection of barricades, fires and looting of food stores or pharmacies, occur despite the establishment of a night curfew.

Last night was quieter than the previous one, since, according to the prefecture, the security forces prevented “most attempts at concentration and material damage” in the center of cities and rural areas.

“There were many blockades, but little looting,” confirmed a police source. According to the prefecture, 11 arrests were made.

But the educational authorities today suspended face-to-face classes in schools and high schools, when 30 people must appear in court for participating in the altercations that have shaken the island for a week.

Until November 16, 46.4% of the elderly received at least one injection in Guadeloupe, a rate much lower than that registered in the French territories in Europe, higher than 75%.

In the nearby French department of Martinique, meanwhile, truck drivers and taxi drivers today paralyzed a good part of the economic activity, responding to the call of union organizations that protested against the mandatory vaccination for health personnel.
