An international review study has now evaluated the effects of extreme heat, extreme cold and temperature fluctuations on asthma. Both extremes increase susceptibility to viruses and allergens and reduce lung function and immunity.
According to the authors of the study, inflammatory mechanisms are suspected to be a potential trigger. Further clarification of this connection is important in order to protect sensitive people from the effects of extreme weather events.
