Scientists are now warning in the specialist journal “Trends in Plant Science” from anthropomorphizing plants. This could happen “Lead to misunderstandings and false interpretations and ultimately harm rather than help the laudable goal of preserving forests”.
In their now published work, the scientists demonstrate in detail based on existing research literature that such statements are not scientifically tenable. “This has not been scientifically proven by anything”, explained Hubert Hasenauer, Professor of Silviculture at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Boku) Vienna. For example, the claim that trees of the same species support each other and keep each other alive is clearly refuted by numerous research studies on the importance of intraspecific competition, they emphasize.
That too “Mother tree”-Concept is not tenable for scientists. The researchers consider publications that supposedly demonstrate a targeted transfer of carbon from older to younger trees via fungal networks to be incorrect. What actually exists is the cane rash when a felled tree sprouts again from the stump. “But that is the same root, that has nothing to do with the ‘mother tree'”said Hasenauer.
