Young people looking for their dream job

Questions about questions. Anyone who was in exhibition halls 20 and 21 in Wels this morning was able to observe one thing in particular: thousands of young people asking training companies the proverbial “hole in the stomach”. Austria’s largest career and training fair, “Youth & Career”, was already well attended on the opening day.

The number of exhibitors has never been as large as this year: 340 companies, associations, schools and universities are recruiting the skilled workers of tomorrow in the trade fair city.

“Most people are just curious,” says Gabriella Vukadin. She is an apprentice trainer at the Gunskirchen engine manufacturer Rotax and is now answering young people’s questions at the trade fair. “I talk about the various training opportunities in the company and about my everyday work.

A crowd puller at their stand: a go-kart racing simulator, where the queue gets longer and longer as the morning goes on. “Of course we also want to offer ‘something you can touch’,” says Vukadin.

The Gunskirchen company is not alone in this. Whether it’s a climbing wall, a push-up competition or a VR sleigh ride – the exhibitors leave no stone unturned to arouse young people’s interest in their business and to get into conversation with them.

Every professional group is represented here, from bakers to car mechanics, and no one wants to miss the trade fair: “We always find apprentices during the four days of the trade fair, which is why it is a fixed date for us,” says the trainer at a food retailer.

“Something for everyone”

“I am interested in mechatronics and am also considering starting an apprenticeship in this area,” says 13-year-old Lara Graf. She attends middle school in Waldzell (Ried im Innkreis district) and came here with her class to help decide on to get an overview of a profession.

Anika Thumfart from Bad Leonfelden is also here with her class. “I’m looking for a school for high school. The fact that so many secondary schools are exhibiting at the fair suits her.

There is something for “really everyone” at “Youth & Career,” says Doris Hummer, President of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, who opened the trade fair together with State Councilor Markus Achleitner.

The “Youth & Career” trade fair presented by the OÖN will take place until Saturday, October 7th, in exhibition halls 20 and 21 in Wels with free admission.
