“It was very bad,” says Ahmed Hagag. The Braunau boxer is celebrating his comeback at the weekend at the European Cup in Budva, Montenegro, after recovering from an eye injury. In the spring, the super heavyweight’s left vision was blurry. Doctors discovered six small tears in the eye and a detached retina. The cause of the injury was a blow to the eye.
Instead of fighting for an Olympic ticket at the European Games in June, the 23-year-old underwent an operation. After almost four months, the European Championship third place and World Cup quarter-finalist is now returning to the ring. “Now everything is fine again, but I’m not yet at 100 percent like I was at the World Cup,” says Hagag, who is nevertheless confident going into the European Cup.
In order to make it to Paris, Austria’s most promising boxer has to do well at the world qualifying tournaments next year.
