The emergency services saw a picture of devastation on Wednesday morning in the municipality of Munderfing (Braunau am Inn district): a truck collided with a regional train at the railway crossing on the Achenloh municipal road and was torn in two. The towing vehicle with the driver’s cab overturned and came to rest on the left side of the vehicle. The unloaded trailer came to a stop on the opposite side of the track.

The regional train on the Steindorf – Braunau railway line only came to a stop a little later, despite emergency braking. The 40-year-old train driver was no longer able to stop in time when the tractor-trailer slowly crossed the unbarred intersection secured with a stop sign around 9:50 a.m. It is not known why the 51-year-old driver of the truck drove onto the tracks despite the approaching train. According to the police, he had previously stopped and then backed up around 30 meters to let oncoming cars pass.

They were led out of the wagon by emergency services from the Achenlohe, Markt Friedburg, Munderfing and Mauerkirchen fire departments. The semi-trailer vehicle was totaled. The train set was seriously damaged, the police said on Wednesday evening. Work at the accident site took several hours.
