The United States sees Uruguay as a partner for the expansion of green hydrogen

The Secretary of Energy United States, Jennifer Granholm, confirmed that the North American country “wants to work” with Uruguay for the expansion of green hydrogen on the continent, within the framework of the conference Hydrogen Americas 2023 Summit & Exhibition.

Uruguay is a leader in the region in terms of the development not only of sustainable energy, but also of green hydrogen, which is emerging as the clean fuel of the future. In that sense, the largest investment in the history of the nation will be, precisely, a production plant for this element, in Paysandu.

For this reason, there are several first world countries that have already shown their interest in the local industry of this element; among them, Germany —with whom the country signed a memorandum of understanding for projects of these characteristics. Now, the United States is also joining in.

During the Hydrogen Americas 2023 Summit & Exhibition conference, which included the participation of different government representatives from the region and took place in Washington, The Secretary of Energy of the North American country indicated that Uruguay is among the countries with which the United States wants to collaborate in sustainable energy matterwhile “sharing information is the basis for powerful associations”.

Granholm stated that the United States “wants to work” with nations like Uruguay, which plans to create 35,000 direct jobs in clean hydrogen; Chili, which is expanding its electrolysis capacity to 5 GW by 2025; Brazil that plans an investment of 200 billion dollars in clean hydrogen over the next 20 years; and Canada, which aims to supply up to 30% of its energy from hydrogen by 2050.

Uruguay’s potential in green hydrogen

During the conference, the minister of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), Omar Paganiniexplained the strengths of Uruguay which position it as one of the most relevant actors on the international stage in terms of the production of new sustainable energies, among which the green hydrogen.

In that sense, the leader explained that the country’s long-term strategy is to consolidate itself as a supplier and exporter of this element, for which 20 billion dollars of investment and 35,000 jobs by 2040.

“Uruguay will be able to provide sustainable and diversified energy to achieve decarbonization at a global level,” Paganini said during the meeting, organized by the Sustainable Energy Council and the United States Department of Energy.

The minister also pointed out that the country has excellent conditions for the generation of renewable energyboth from solar and wind sources, which add to the abundant availability of carbon dioxide of biogenic origin, oils and animal fat.
