Gates (67) took over the property, whose original name is Vila San Giorgio, through his real estate company Four Seasons, reported the Milan daily “Corriere della Sera” (Thursday edition).
The 1,200 square meter property is now divided into twelve mini-apartments and has a private elevator that leads down to the beach below the castle. The Microsoft founder is said to have bought it to turn it into a luxury hotel for his Four Seasons chain, the paper reported. The villa, which was purchased through a Genoese insurance company, is said to have cost Gates 60 million euros.
Portofino is a popular vacation spot for many wealthy people. Pier Silvio Berlusconi, the eldest son of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died in June, also owns a villa there.
