Young people in Iran in a coma: new case of Mahsa Amini?

She previously had an encounter with security guards on the subway because she was said to have violated the rules on veiling.

The authorities rejected a connection. As the Kurdish human rights group Hengaw announced on Platform X, Geravand’s mother was arrested by security forces. This was not initially officially confirmed. Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had already expressed outrage at the incident on Wednesday: “A young woman in Iran is fighting for her life again,” the Green politician wrote on X. “Just because she showed her hair in the subway “It’s unbearable.” The girl’s parents should now have the opportunity to “be at their daughter’s bedside.”

“Shocked and concerned” by reports

The US special envoy for Iran, Abram Paley, also expressed concern. The U.S. is monitoring developments surrounding Geravand’s condition very closely, he wrote on “stand with the brave people of Iran and work with the global community to hold the regime responsible for abuses.”

The government in Tehran rejected the criticism. Germany, but also the USA and Great Britain, expressed “disingenuous concerns” in this regard, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote on X. He accused the governments of the three countries of “interventionist and biased” comments.

It was only in mid-September that nationwide protests broke out again in Iran on the occasion of the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death. The 22-year-old Kurdish woman died in police custody just over a year ago after the so-called moral police arrested her. She had been accused of not following the dress code. Amini’s death sparked months of anti-leadership protests that were suppressed.
