Two years after her tearful exit from the Olympics due to mental problems, Simone Biles is back. And how: The exceptional American gymnast won the national all-around title with the USA team at the World Championships in Antwerp. With now 33 medals at the World Championships and Olympic Games, Biles has become the most successful gymnast in history. So far she has been tied with Larissa Latynina from the former Soviet Union, but her 18 Olympic medals are unmatched.
Biles didn’t even have to unpack her latest trump card: The 26-year-old had already created a new jumping combination three years ago, which she now finally wants to show at World Championship level and thus have it recognized by the world association FIG: a wheel turn on the springboard, Flicflac on the table (Yurtschenko, named after the Soviet gymnast Natalia Yurchenko) followed by a double somersault backwards. This innovation, which the FIG describes as the most difficult jump in the rating guidelines for women to date, should be called “Biles II” to underline the exceptional status of the superstar. She presented the jump at a competition for the first time in spring 2021 in Indianapolis.
But even without the last risk, she earned a high score of 14,800 points. She then completed the program with both routine and skill, leading the US team to victory. The Austrian team ended up in 20th place.
Höck in the rings final on Saturday
The Styrian Vinzenz Höck will be in action tomorrow in the final of the best eight in the rings. Only the medal winners from Tokyo 2021 and a two-time World Cup winner from this year were better in the preliminary fight.

In the all-around competition last Sunday, Askhab Matiev performed well on five apparatus before falling off the pommel horse and only finishing 55th overall. Ricardo Rudy from Wallern didn’t really get into gymnastics, fell on three apparatus and only ended up in 82nd place.
