A pollutant leak occurred in a hall at the Simmering power plant on Thursday afternoon. Toxic ammonia escaped when a tank was being filled, reported fire department spokesman Christian Feiler. A major fire and rescue operation followed. Luckily, no one got hurt. The exit was stopped after around half an hour.
Feiler praised the “good communication” with the emergency services; there is also a company fire department at the plant. The release of pollutants was limited to the hall; no ammonia escaped outdoors. The firefighters worked in the property wearing protective suits of the highest safety class. 110 firefighters were deployed with 30 vehicles, plus ten rescue teams. There were no injuries in the affected area.
Ammonia is a colorless gas with a pungent odor. When inhaled, it can irritate the respiratory tract and, in higher concentrations, can cause chemical burns, suffocation and pulmonary edema.
The Simmering power plant is operated by Wien Energie. It is the largest power plant in Austria.
