The board of the Institute for Machine Learning and head of the LIT AI Lab at Johannes Kepler University Linz has paved the way to today’s AI with his “long short-time memory” (LSTM) technology. The reason for being honored with the highly respected AI innovation award is also Hochreiter’s current research – on his own language model, which, according to preliminary tests, is even superior to the industry leader GPT-4.

“Award is an incentive”

The German AI Prize was awarded for the fifth time on Thursday in Berlin and is endowed with 35,000 euros in the innovation category.

The 56-year-old Hochreiter sees the award above all as a motivation: “The prize is a great honor and a confirmation of my previous research work. It is also an incentive for me and my team at the JKU to develop artificial intelligence in the interests of people and for the sake of… “To sustainably develop the benefits of our society,” the Bavarian native is quoted as saying in a press release.
