UN demands impartial investigation into the execution of eight youths

Eight corpses of young people, three of them with criminal records, were found mutilated and with signs of torture on Monday, after an intervention by Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) that lasted almost 48 hours inside the Salgueiro favela complex, in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.

The action was triggered because on Saturday morning a police officer was killed inside the favela.

“The police entered our house, took out our cousin and appeared hours later executed in a swamp with other boys,” a witness to the police action told television.

Neighbors of the favela said they live with fear of police operations against organized crime.

The executions were not assumed by the police but it is suspected that they were extrajudicial executions perpetrated by “militiamen”, as the men are known. death squads, plainclothes police officers who take advantage of the intelligence they possess.

The Rio de Janeiro ombudsman accused the police of having acted in “revenge” and outside the law.

The paramilitaries are responsible for much of the violence in Rio de Janeiro, since they have assumed control of drug trafficking in various regions and charge the population to provide private security in the favelas. These are usually off-duty police and military.

These paramilitary groups in the past were vindicated and decorated by the president’s family Jair Bolsonaro.

These mafias are accused of having murdered the socialist councilor and black activist in 2018 Marielle Franco.
