Prosecutors stopped against the controversial article in the Accountability

The Association of Fiscal Magistrates of Uruguay intensifies the forceful measures and will denounce the “permanent harassment” before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The Association of Fiscal Magistrates of Uruguay they made a unemployment today between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in protest for the article of the bill Accountability that inhibits the practice as a lawyer after leaving the prosecutor’s offices. In addition, you will report to the International Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) that this initiative is “harassment” by some legislators in Parliament.

The conflict with the prosecutors continues to increase after the Association declared itself in conflict on Wednesday, in rejection of the controversial Accountability article that obtained its approval in the plenary session of the Senate —and now you must have the approval of the Low camera before the modifications.

For this reason, the union of prosecutors of Uruguay decided to “intensify” the forceful measures adopted, and from today they will only attend flagrancy issues. Likewise, between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. they stopped all activities completely, going on strike.

The president of the Association of Prosecutors, William Rose, maintained that “based on the new episodes of widespread accusations against the prosecutors made in the Parliament by a senator, because the approval of this article of inhibition was maintained, which does not have reasons of general interest stated but rather refers to disputes related to the former court prosecutor that have nothing to do with the group of prosecutors and because the union’s demands continue not to be accepted, we unanimously resolved to intensify the measures of not serving lawyers and starting this Friday we will only attend to the Flagrancy (this is urgent and cannot be postponed)”.

In parallel, “and with regard to the “permanent harassment”, Rosa explained in dialogue with underlining that “we will make a story that we will try to present to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in an attempt to expose the situation of harassment that our institution is experiencing”.

What are the prosecutors demanding?

The discomfort of the prosecutors increased after learning that article 630 included in the Accountability bill establishes the inhibition of these officials from the Power of attorney to practice law in the private sphere—and in criminal matters—for three years after his cessation.

After several complaints without seeming to reach a satisfactory response, the Association of Fiscal Magistrates of the Uruguay decided to enter a permanent assembly and resort to forceful measures to promote a platform of claims whose first point is the non-approval of the controversial article.

“That the inadequacy between the prosecutor and judge salarieslegally equivalent, which was generated by the parliament itself in 2022″ and that “sufficient resources are provided for institutional strengthening and the effective fulfillment of the tasks assigned to the Prosecutor’s Office,” are the rest of the union’s demands, some of which they have been carrying out for years, together with the salary equalization between deputy and assigned prosecutors.
