“My voice is exhausted after so much shouting,” said a triumphant Raul Torres, managing director of PLD Space, shortly after the launch on Saturday (local time). All missile systems worked “perfectly”. Mission control video showed engineers cheering and congratulating each other as the rocket soared into the night sky.

With the successful launch, PLD Space conducted the first fully private rocket launch in Europe. The rocket has a payload on board for testing purposes, but it will not be made public, the company said. The company will now focus on tripling its workforce. “This is just the beginning,” Torres said, offering hope for his stalled space ambitions.

The Huelva startup’s overnight test launch came after two previous attempts had to be aborted. The Miura-1 rocket is as tall as a three-story building and has a payload capacity of 100 kg.

Saturday’s mission with the Miura-1 demonstrator was the first of two planned suborbital missions. But analysts say the most critical test will be with the larger Miura-5 for orbital services. Its start is scheduled for 2025.
