How did the new conflict between Gaza and Israel start?
The new stage of the conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip It was triggered after a surprise offensive by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which fired thousands of rockets and infiltrated fighters by land, sea and air. “We decided to put an end to all the crimes of the (Israeli) occupation; its time of rampaging without accountability is over,” the group declared. “We announce the operation Al Aqsa Flood and we fired, in the first 20-minute attack, more than 5,000 rockets.” The Israeli army reported firing at least 2,200 rockets from Gaza between 6:30 and 10:30 local time.
The Israeli armed forces reported the activation of sirens in the south of the country, while the police asked the population to remain close to the bomb shelters. The sirens were also activated in Jerusalem, according to journalists from AFP. In parallel, images of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas began to circulate while the Israeli army responded by attacking targets of the organization considered terrorist by air.

Among the dead is the president of the regional council of the Israeli towns bordering the northeast of the Gaza Strip, killed in a shootout with Palestinian attackers.
For his part, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu announced that “We are in war” and that they will win the confrontation, while ordering “a broad mobilization” of reservists. “The enemy will pay an unprecedented price,” the president promised in a video message, in which he acknowledged that Hamas, which rules the enclave, launched “a criminal surprise attack.”
Israel maintains a harsh blockade against the Gaza Strip, an impoverished and overpopulated Palestinian territory, since Hamas assumed full power in 2007.
Since then there have been several devastating wars between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces. The two sides experienced tensions in September, when Israel closed the border to Palestinian workers for two weeks; although the reopening had raised hopes of an improvement in the situation.
