Will Upper Austria’s women’s football scene get an addition in the form of another team starting next season? From next season, SV Gmunden wants to start with a women’s team in addition to its two men’s teams (State League West, 2nd Class South). “We are currently in the process of creating the structures. If somehow possible, we want to start next season,” reveals Gmunden chairman Günter Laska.
The club has had the idea of putting together a team for women and girls for a long time – the withdrawal of a former women’s team from the immediate area gave the club officials the decisive impetus: “We never finally tackled it because there was a connection with Altmünster “There was a women’s team in the area. After it decided to end, girls came to us saying they would like to continue playing.”
Gmunden then contacted the local rivals: “We wanted to reassure ourselves once again that we didn’t come across as wanting to steal their players. Since that wasn’t the case, we decided to finally tackle the project.” With success: Training is already taking place once a week under the direction of coach Peter Märzendorfer, and around 20 girls and women are currently on the ball in Gmunden.
Of course, an additional team also means additional organizational effort for the club. Laska: “Nothing is easy these days because you have to fight for every official and coach.” Nevertheless, the new team should be worthwhile in the long term: “We hope that it will have a generally positive effect on the club, and we also want to increase the number of women on the sports field.”
