“The design of the proposed law and the expansion of the term tobacco products to include all nicotine-containing products should be understood primarily as a measure to support prevention,” said Deputy State Governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) in a broadcast on Sunday.
It is currently not possible to say when the law can be passed in the state parliament, said Svazek’s spokesman Dom Kamper when asked on Sunday evening, as there is an extended review period due to the involvement of a federal authority. But it is assumed that it will be “in the next few months”.
The aim of the law is to ensure that “young people only use nicotine-containing products later and possibly not at all.” In contrast to the equally commonly consumed “snus”, the nicotine pouches are tobacco-free, but do contain nicotine and are currently becoming increasingly popular among young people. At the conference of state youth representatives in June, an agreement was reached because a cross-state solution was needed. “We already said back then that we couldn’t just wait for a nationwide regulation, but had to take precautionary action at the state level,” said Deputy State Governor Marlene Svazek, explaining Salzburg’s initiative.
