The fire broke out on Saturday at an altitude of around 1,530 meters in steep terrain for an unknown reason. According to operations manager Markus Fallenegger, local fire brigade commander of the Großgmain Volunteer Fire Department, it affected an area of around 50 square meters. The fire brigade, mountain rescue service and the aviation police were on duty together. The fire was extinguished on Sunday afternoon.

Two helicopters in use

The fire had probably been burning for several days before a hiker discovered the smoke and several embers on the west side of the Untersberg on Saturday afternoon and alerted the emergency services. The extinguishing work was difficult, Fallenegger reported on Sunday. The firefighters had to be secured by the mountain rescue team when working in steep terrain. The air police brought the water up the mountain with two helicopters and there it was collected in a container.

The embers had dug deep into the ground and the wind had fanned the fire. A total of 65 members of the Großgmain, Wals-Siezenheim, Bayrisch Gmain volunteer fire departments, flight helpers from the Flachgau district, the mountain rescue service from the Grödig local office and two helicopters from the Federal Ministry were on duty.
