Due to the escalation of violence in Israel, the UN Security Council met for an emergency meeting late yesterday evening. UN chief Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the Hamas attack. He expressed his horror that civilians had been attacked and kidnapped in their own homes. Everything must now be done to calm the situation.

US President Joe Biden assured Israel of the support of the United States. “Israel has a right to defend itself and its people,” Biden said. A senior White House official said there were in-depth discussions with Israel about the need for military assistance.

EU Council President Charles Michel denounced the indiscriminate attacks against Israel and its people. NATO also condemned the violence by Hamas and other radical Palestinian organizations.

Words of warning came from Russia, which is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. Moscow called for an immediate ceasefire and a negotiation process should be initiated to achieve a long-awaited peace, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Threats against Israel came again from Iran. Saudi Arabia, however, called for an immediate end to the violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

In Austria, the government and the Federal President were horrified. “This has to stop now!” demanded Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.
