Our current series “Our Forest” is all about this unique ecosystem and the consequences of climate change. Together with our readers we want to plant 100,000 trees for Upper Austria.

The Bad Schallerbach middle school has initiated a project worth imitating with its “school forest”. Every year at the start of school, the first grades go into the forest with their teachers to choose and dig up their own little tree. With the support of their teachers, the students put their tree in a pot and take responsibility for its care.

Over the course of the school year, the tree is looked after in the subjects “Biology and Environmental Education” and “Environmental Issues”. It receives enough water and sunlight to develop splendidly. The goal is for these small trees to be planted in a specially designated area in Bad Schallerbach and thus form their own school forest. “In November we plan to plant the plants that were dug up two years ago for the first time,” announces director Fritz Eibl. The aim of the “School Forest” project is not only to increase awareness of environmental protection, but also to strengthen the children’s sense of community and willingness to take responsibility.

Since last school year, students at the middle school have been able to choose between a focus on the environment or tourism.
