A senior police officer from Muzaffarpur district told AFP that the three police officers had made a “big mistake” and were suspended from duty. “It was the body of an elderly man who is yet to be identified,” said police officer Rakesh Kumar. The man was hit and crushed by a speeding truck. His upper body was taken for an autopsy, but the police simply threw the badly mutilated “lower half” of the body into the water. According to a media report, the remains have now been recovered.
The Indian police are already considered corrupt and ineffective – in the poor and underdeveloped state of Bihar in the northeast of the country, the police’s work is particularly inadequate.
