The Frente Amplio would question Bustillo for the second time over the Salto Grande scandal

He Broad Front (FA) analyzes the possibility of calling the minister of Foreign Relations Francisco Bustillo one week after his questioning in Parliament in case he does not comply with the motion voted in the Lower House on the dismissal of the people directly appointed in the delegation of Uruguay in the Mixed Technical Commission (CTM) of Salto Grande.

The problems for the government around the controversy of the CTM of Big Jump They did not stop with the resignation of their president, Carlos Albisu, much less with the questioning of the chancellor and the minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Azucena Arbeleche: in the absence of clear responses to the parliamentary decision to “immediately” cease all contracts made since 2020 on a “discretionary basis” through direct hiring, the opposition is considering taking action again on the matter, as announced the Broad Front deputy Nicolas Viera.

The decision to consider a new call for interpellation for Bustillo arose in the meeting that the legislator had with the president of the FA, Fernando Pereira, in which he gave an account of what happened in the Lower House on Tuesday of last week; and followed the general line that the government is not complying with the definition by Parliament, even though it has already had the necessary time to do so.

In this regard, Viera expressed in a press conference that “we do not know what the government is going to do”: “It is one of our concerns. It seems to us that the inaction of the government is worrying because we do not find much echo in complying with the resolution made by Parliament, which, although it is not binding, the president himself promised to study it and carry it out.

As explained by the deputy in dialogue with the newspaper, the opposition will give this week to the government to issue a decision regarding hiring in the CTM of Big Jump —something that even the president Luis Lacalle Pou He maintained what he would do after the decision in Deputies—, the resignation of the three delegates of the binational organization —Martín Burutarán, Nicolás Irigoyen and Daniel Arcieri— and the need to have a comptroller.

If not, a new questioning appears to be the most likely: “It was Parliament that convened this instance and Parliament is the place where the chancellor promised to take a line that would respond to the uncertainty of the unanimity of the political parties in Parliament,” said the Frente Amplista legislator.

The Executive Branch, meanwhile, is thinking about partial compliance with the parliamentary motion, since it does not coincide with the decision to request the resignation of the delegates; something that Bustillo must also explain in committee.

A half acceptance by Delgado

The secretary of Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, assured that “there may be discretion and abuse of discretion” in the CTM of Big jump, but he warned that “there is neither illegality nor irregularities”, in line with what was expressed by Lacalle Pou.

Regarding the motion approved in Parliament to request the resignation of the members of the Uruguayan delegation, Delgado avoided giving answers and said that Lacalle Pou will analyze the job, although he admitted that “this type of situation gives us the opportunity to change forward”, for which a sane agreement would be necessary. Argentina.

When asked about direct hiring in the CTM, he separated himself from the operation. “I am in the broad lines, but not in the operations. Not about the detail,” the leader clarified and chirped the Wide Front pointing out: “I could talk about what happened in the last period, the one before that, and the one before that, but I don’t want to stop at that. “I want to look forward”
