The 20-year-old was sentenced on Wednesday by the Malmö District Court to pay 90 daily rates of 50 Swedish krona for disobedience to law enforcement authorities. This corresponds to a total of just under 390 euros and three times the amount of your first fine. She also has to pay 1,000 crowns (87 euros) to a fund to support victims of violence.

“Stand Up For Science”

In court, Thunberg wore a T-shirt with the slogan “Stand Up For Science.” She rejected any criminal action. As the newspaper “Aftonbladet” reported from the courtroom, Thunberg justified her actions by saying that the climate crisis is a crisis that threatens health and life. She said that the industry that had committed the actual crime by causing the climate crisis had been harmed.

Protest action after court date

Thunberg had already been fined in Malmö on July 24th because she did not follow police instructions during a protest in the oil port of the southern Swedish city. A few hours later, she took part in another, very similar climate protest in the port, in which oil tankers were blocked again – that is the action for which she has now been convicted. She did not comply with police requests to clear the street at the time.
