Leaders from across the political spectrum unanimously condemned Gustavo Penadés after the Senate Chamber decided to expel him from parliament after being accused of multiple crimes for sexual abuse.
This Wednesday, the Senate voted unanimously to expel Gustavo Penadés following a request that arose from his former political force, the National Party (PN).
The former senator is being held in the Florida jailwaiting for a doctor’s visit Forensic Technical Institute (ITF) to examine him, given that he submitted a request citing health issues to avoid being placed in preventive detention.
President Luis Lacalle Pouwho repeatedly acknowledged his friendship with Penadesstated today that “Justice has ruled” and that “it is not an easy day, it is a very sad day.”
Lacalle Pouadded that “if this situation is confirmed in a sentence, it is obviously a person that I do not know, it is not a person that one knew.”
“It is a serious issue, it is a serious issue institutionally, in regards to the crimes apparently committed, and then personally, it is not an easy day,” he said.
“Child abuse, abuse of power”
For its part, the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cossecommented through his X account (formerly Twitter) that Penades was involved in “child abuse”, “abuse of power”, “misuse of the State to intimidate victims” and a “weakening of confidence in the guarantee system.”
“The surprise of the surroundings is astonishing. This is not over,” the department head said in reference to the PN leaders.
Through the same social network, the Mayor of Canelones, Yamandú Orsiexpressed feeling “pain, anger and relief” after learning of the accusation of Penades.
“Pain for those who suffered abuse. Anger at the orchestrated attempts to prevent justice from being done. Relief to see that our Justice still works,” said the Canary Islands leader.
