“Double victory” in the athlete election: Gall won two stages

Felix Gall, who made sporting history in the summer as the winner of the queen stage of this year’s Tour de France, was in the spotlight twice. The 25-year-old Tyrolean didn’t just win the title “Sportsman of the year”he was also called “Rising Star of the Year” brought on stage. “I never expected to spark such enthusiasm with my success on the queen stage of the Tour de France. If you look at who has already won this trophy in Austria, it’s a great honor for me”, the always modest Gall remained quite humble even as the newly crowned athlete of the year. Behind Gall, his Tyrolean compatriot Jakob Schubert (climbing) came in second place, while the Nordic combined athlete Johannes Lamparter, another Tyrolean, came third. The fact that golf professional Sepp Straka missed the podium and only came fourth caused a lot of criticism before the final award ceremony. In the women’s race, Pinkelnig’s success prevented Anna Gasser’s fourth victory, who came second this year. Mountain biker Mona Mitterwallner came in third.

Among the para athletes, handbiker Tom Frühwirth and ski ace Veronika Aigner won the titles. The Special Award was shared by three very young 70-year-olds: Annemarie Moser-Pröll, Franz Klemm and Hans Krankl.

Mountain running world champion Andrea Mayr achieved the best Upper Austrian placement in sixth place, while Kitzbühel winner Vincent Kriechmayr dropped to eighth place.
