Yamandú Orsi promotes an initiative to strengthen the recycling system in Canelones

The mayor of cannelloni and pre-candidate Wide Front for the presidency, Yamandu Orsi, will sign an agreement today together with the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU) to strengthen the recycling system throughout the department.

The objective will be to generate synergies and strengthen the recovery process of recyclable materials in Canelones, at a time when the environmental issue is increasingly relevant not only on the agenda of the department, but also of the national government – something demonstrated with the loan granted by the World Bank to the country, linked to environmental care goals.

Based on the agreement, investments were made in the improvement of the classification plants and in the strengthening of the equipment of the clean collection circuit. This will mainly contribute to increasing the efficiency of the recycling system in all Canary Islands.

The signing will be carried out jointly with the Municipality of Canelones and Plan Vale, and will take place this afternoon, from 4 p.m. at the headquarters of the Chamber of Industries. The president of the CIU, Fernando Pache, will also participate.

An initiative to recover ecosystems

Another environmental initiative that the Canelones Municipality will carry out is a plan for the recovery of ecosystems of the Santa Lucía River Basin and the coastal area of the department where technicians, authorities, institutions and even Canarian residents would participate.

The measure is named after Restoration Plan for Degraded Ecosystems and has the objective of carrying out interventions in the degraded ecosystems of the department for 45 days. Through different actions, both the institutional authorities, department technicians and even neighbors will be able to come forward until the month of November to help the recovery of these natural spaces.

The mayor’s ambitious plan Orsi It was intended to be carried out before the pandemic, however, the quarantine made it impossible for the measure to be carried out. Meanwhile, the plan is already within the five-year budget of the Frente Amplista candidate, who took it into account when designing it.

The initiative has two axes: on the one hand, the recovery of Santa Lucía River Basina natural space that suffered the consequences of the drought and the lack of rain —which ended up compromising human access to water—; improving water quality and increasing biodiversity.

On the other hand, the recovery of coastal spaces. To achieve this, efforts will be made to stop the proliferation of invasive species, native vegetation will be planted and an attempt will be made to restore the dunes with captive fences. At the same time, pedestrian spaces and parking will be adapted, and efforts will be made to delimit conservation and exclusion zones.

The total investment that will be allocated is 10 million pesos, more than 255 thousand dollars at current value. On the other hand, reports will be prepared to account for the actions, to which citizens will have access.
