German houses: Subdued increase in construction prices

Because material costs and interest rates are rising, demand is weakening.

The 6.4 percent increase compared to the same month last year represented the smallest increase since spring 2021, the Federal Statistical Office announced this week.

There was an increase of 8.8 percent in May and 15.1 percent in February. From May to August, construction prices rose by 0.2 percentage points.

The lower increase is likely to be related to a so-called base effect: prices are now being compared with those of 2022, when many raw materials and energy became massively more expensive as a result of the Russian war against Ukraine. But weakening demand due to many cancellations as a result of increased material and interest costs could also have had a dampening effect, economists say.
