Almost half of Austria is covered with forest. The Austrian Federal Forests – ÖBf for short – are the largest forest owners in Austria with 15 percent of the forest area. Expressed in numbers, that is 510,000 hectares. This also includes national parks such as the Donau-Auen or the Kalkalpen National Park.
Story: After the First World War and the collapse of the Empire, the federal forests emerged from the monarchy’s possessions – essentially from the private forests of the expropriated Habsburgs – and the state forest. In 1997, the Federal Forests were spun off from public administration and converted into a stock corporation. 50 percent of the profits are returned to the state – this includes income from the timber industry, hunting, real estate and fishing, as the ÖBf also owns 74 lakes in the country.
964 employees generated sales of around 250 million euros in 2021. The Salzkammergut traditionally plays an important role for the federal forests; the Steinkogel district in Ebensee is also home to the only forestry technology company where large forestry machines such as harvesters or cable cranes are maintained.
Great support
The Federal Forests also support the OÖN series “Our forest. 100,000 trees for Upper Austria”. Just like our readers, who have already taken on almost 20,000 tree sponsorships together with companies, partners and communities, more than 50,000 new trees have already been planted.
- 2826 votes: The forest series motivates our readers – more than 150 photos have already been uploaded to nachrichten.at/seelebaumeln and more than 2,800 votes have been cast.
- 50,000: In four weeks, 19,924 tree sponsorships have already been taken over by readers, companies and partners and more than 50,000 trees have been planted.
