The year 1973 marked a turning point in road safety: Back then, exactly 50 years ago, the ÖAMTC carried out its first tire test. A lot has changed over the decades – but one thing has remained the same: the desire to give consumers objective assistance in making purchasing decisions. This is also the case for this winter season, as Steffan Kerbl, tire expert at the mobility club, explains: “Together with our partner organizations, we looked at 32 models, 16 each from the common dimensions 205/60 R16 92H and 225/45 R17 91H. The conclusion: Only three fail, eleven achieve the grade of good. There are also 18 tires rated satisfactory, which you can also use without hesitation if you know what to look out for.”
- The results in detail:
Which winter tires you ultimately choose depends on your personal driving profile. Many models are now real all-rounders that cut a fine figure under a wide variety of conditions. “Every now and then there is still the classic conflict of objectives, for example with the Austone Athena SP-901, which is the best of the 205s on winter roads. On the other hand, it is only ‘sufficient’ in dry conditions and particularly weak in wet conditions. which leads to a failure in the overall ranking,” says Kerbl. Anyone who places great value on driving comfort and good performance on dry roads is particularly well served in this dimension by the models from Dunlop and Michelin. However, if you live in an area where there is often snow on the road, you should choose Hankook tires.

The 225 models from Semperit and Hankook have slight weaknesses on wintry or dry roads, but do well in terms of environmental performance. The situation is similar with all other tires rated Satisfactory, although there are also those that are similarly good (or weak) in two criteria and do not particularly stand out anywhere.
