A cabinet meeting to ratify the new measures is scheduled for 2.30pm.
Italy has seen a steady rise in infections in recent weeks, but a successful vaccination campaign has kept its epidemic at bay. Other European nations are tightening restrictions and a new lockdown has been established in neighboring Austria.
The new Italian measures will tighten the requirements to obtain the mobility pass, which allows vaccinated people to access leisure activities and services, in order to exclude people who have a negative test in the last 48 hours but have not been vaccinated, sources said.
The duration of the pass will also be shortened from one year to nine months, according to the sources, who said the measure seeks to encourage people to receive booster injections.
The number of daily infections in Italy stands at around 10,000 today, up from 20,000 in the same period last year, when hundreds of deaths were reported every day.
