According to data from the Atlas VPN team based on a report from Abnormal Security, Microsoft was by far the most impersonated brand by cybercriminals in 2023.
The global technology company’s likeness has been spoofed more than 650,000 times, accounting for 4.31 percent of all phishing attacks across 350 brands. Other well-known companies were in the top three places, including the payment service provider PayPal (1.05 percent) and the social media giant Facebook (0.68 percent).
Cloud-based electronic signature technology provider DocuSign (0.48) came in fourth place, while US financial and business management company Intuit (0.39) and logistics company DHL (0.34) came in fifth and sixth place, respectively .
Other brands in the top ten include computer security software company McAfee (0.32 percent), Google (0.30), Amazon (0.27) and the largest database management company, Oracle (0.21). By posing as well-known brands like those mentioned above, cybercriminals reliably exploit victims’ trust and undermine their caution, making it easier to trick them into revealing account details or installing malware via malicious links.
Gather and spy on information
Fraudsters typically achieve this by collecting public information through company websites and social media accounts and preying on targets with access to sensitive information and login credentials. The scammers can then create a message masquerading as a fake brand message to obtain information from the targets.
