At around 11 a.m., a 53-year-old from Wels went on a tour with two other hikers to the 1,037-meter-high Großer Sonnstein in the municipality of Ebensee. During the descent, the woman tripped, fell and injured herself. Hikers who happened to pass by, including two doctors, immediately provided first aid and made an emergency call.
The Gmunden Alpine Police and Ebensee Mountain Rescue went to the injured hiker. The woman was flown to the intermediate landing site in Trauneck with the emergency medical helicopter “Martin 3” and finally taken to the hospital.
Wind made the rescue operation difficult
A 31-year-old woman from the Scheibbs district climbed the 1,691 meter high Traunstein in the municipality of Gmunden on Friday. The hiker spent the night on the mountain and began the descent via the “Mairalm” on Saturday. The Lower Austrian fell and injured herself so badly that she could no longer walk. Mountain rescue and Alpine police were notified. A member of the mountain rescue team, who happened to be on Traunstein, also went to the scene of the accident.
The crew of the emergency medical helicopter was able to quickly locate the woman, but was unable to fly to the injured person at the moment due to the strong gusty winds. Mountain rescue and alpine police therefore prepared a rescue using a stretcher and ropes. On the third approach, the 31-year-old was finally rescued by the helicopter using rope and flown to the hospital.
