The building will have seven floors and will have a construction system that promotes energy efficiency and speed in its construction.
In a year Uruguay will have the tallest wooden building in Latin America, thanks to the company Arboreal, a project that required the investment of almost 60 million dollars and that would position the country as a benchmark for small and large scale wood construction.

With a height of seven stories and a construction system that promotes energy efficiency and speed in its construction, the company Arboreal – made up of a Uruguayan investor and another American – will be in charge of carrying out this project. Arboreal decided to embark on the business of Mass Timber (solid wood construction) in 2021 when it acquired a Uruguayan sawmill located in Tacuarembo.

The American investor Mark Crandall and the Uruguayan Matias AbergoPresident of Arboreal and CEO of Enkel Group specialized in Mass Timber construction, bought the Frutifor Lumber Company sawmill for more than 25 million dollars, then invested nearly 12 million dollars in the installation of drying plants and automatic classification of wooden boards, and another 22 million dollars in a new CLT plant, reaching almost a total of 60 million dollars, according to a report Uruguay XXI.
This investment was added to the transformation of the wood production matrix that the company intends to carry out. Uruguay – and that placed it in the world market for CLT (Cross Laminated Lumber) – and also contributed to increasing the drying capacity of the sawmill, doubling its production, and benefiting exports of wood inputs for construction.
The construction will take place in the department of Peach, It will have seven floors and is expected to be ready next year, specifically by October 2024 and its construction would last 290 days. The building is part of the 40 building projects in Mass Timber that are expected to be carried out in the Uruguay between the years 2024 and 2025, as explained by the Uruguayan investor.
Faster and less polluting constructions
The wood processing system, Mass Timber, allows you to build in wood tall buildings, houses, housing complexes, sports centers, medical institutions, schools, among others. Walls built with this procedure allow the walls to be made in a single panel up to 30 centimeters thick, which involves several advantages.
First of all, it contributes to the decarbonization of construction – responsible for 40% of the carbon emission in the environment – as well as allowing greater thermal insulation compared to concrete and steel, while functioning as natural humidity regulator. On the other hand, it allows a system like “embedding”, which favors execution times. This system includes cutting robots that have high precision, which allows the parts to be moved and assembled quickly.
