It took 45 minutes until everything was as usual. There are no bad prospects when running around Lake Wolfgangsee. Even if they had been predicted for him for the first time in 13 years. There had been talk of rain, wind and cold. At 11.15 a.m. sharp, the sun had fought its way back to its usual place over the lake and only exchanged it for the thick clouds again when a large proportion of the 4,941 registered runners had crossed the finish line.
“We are just happy. About the weather, which only gave us drizzle in the morning, but the perfect running temperatures. “About the great number of participants and the excellent sporting achievements,” said organizer Franzsperrer on Sunday afternoon.
91 and not the least bit tired
In the meantime it even smelled like a course record in St. Wolfgang. The Kenyan Ezekiel Kipkorir simply didn’t want to be slowed down on his 27 kilometer long circular route, but in the end he crossed the finish line in 1:28:05, almost two minutes too late for a record. Record holder Hosea Tuei ended up in fourth place. The first Austrian was the two-time Traunsee Mountain Marathon winner Markus Lemp (LC Sicking). In the women’s category, Philice-Cheboirot Kipkerio won in 1:48:37, the first Austrian was Amelie Muss from LCAV Jodl Packaging in 1:55:53.
It had already gotten really loud along the route a few minutes earlier. At 11:39 a.m., start number 7513 turned into the finish line, slowed down briefly, high-fived and finished his 5.2-kilometer panoramic run in a time of 1:01:46 with a satisfied smile. It was Norbert Schild, 91 years old, from Laakirchen. Schild completed his first run in 1985 and his fastest marathon (3:39) in 1997 – at the proud age of 65. Josy Simon from Strobl, who took part in the ten-kilometer bank run, was the second oldest participant in the 51st edition at 90 years old.
The run around Lake Wolfgangsee, which was presented by OÖNachrichten as a media partner, had many emotional moments, not just in terms of sport.
Because some of them didn’t run (just) for themselves: Michael Poimer from Linz would actually have been at the starting line in St. Wolfgang this Sunday. The 29-year-old had registered early and was already looking forward to the 27-kilometer lap. But on September 14th of this year, the athlete fell fatally during a mountain tour from Föhrengrabeneck to Fäustling in Almtal. His friends represented him in white T-shirts printed with a picture of Michael. A goosebumps moment.
Athletes from 47 nations gathered around Lake Wolfgang this weekend. Because on Saturday the little ones (youngest participant 18 months) ran in the junior marathon, and on Sunday the starting signal for the Salzkammergut Marathon took place in Bad Ischl, with Andreas Lahninger in 2:49:34 and Renate Veigl in 3:37:10 decided for themselves.
