Julian Nagelsmann rightly had a smile on his face after his debut as German national football coach. His selection impressed at all levels in front of 37,743 spectators in Hartford and did not allow a 0-1 deficit to derail them on the way to a 3-1 (2-1) victory.
“We deserved to win. We were very good at football and didn’t get hectic even after Christian Pulisic’s dream goal,” said the 36-year-old former Bayern coach, whose signature was clearly visible despite the short preparation time. Nagelsmann started the pressing machine. “It was the style of football that was a little different. We really did a lot of good things,” said captain Ilkay Gündogan (FC Barcelona) with satisfaction. The 32-year-old heralded the turnaround with the 1-1 (39th minute), the other goals were scored by center forward Niclas Füllkrug (58th minute) and Jamal Musiala (61st minute).
DFB sports director Rudi Völler, who looked after the team on an interim basis during the 2-1 win against runners-up France in September, watched the action from the stands – and was extremely pleased: “Nagelsmann is a stroke of luck. The mood in the team is excellent, We see ourselves on the right path.” It’s not just about sporting successes – the next one will follow on Wednesday (2 a.m., ARD) in Philadelphia against Mexico – but also about stirring up euphoria with a view to the home European Championship in 2024. In any case, with a few exceptions, the noise in the forest was positive out of.
“Nagelsmann is resurrecting Germany,” wrote the Spanish “As”. “Wild comeback, first Nagelsmann spectacle,” was the headline in “Bild”. The “kicker” saw “learning effects in record time”: “These 90 minutes give hope that the national team will achieve a sporting turnaround.” The “FAZ” registered “an initial work sample that is impressive.” Die Zeit was less enthusiastic about the performance: “Germany tried to put the US team under pressure with a lot of movement. However, the team had some problems in defense and lost a lot of the ball.”
On November 21st, the DFB team will play against Austria in Vienna.
