The Federal Care Agency (BBU) confirmed today that the refugee accommodation in the former IBIS Hotel near Linz Central Station will be closed at the end of the year. This is not new; it was communicated from the start that the rental agreement only applies to this year. If the situation permits, the refugees will leave earlier. Minor maintenance work will then be necessary before the property is handed over to the owner. As reported, she wants to BIP Immobilien will again develop a hotel business at the location – in 2022 the design advisory board gave the green light for this.

Fears can be put aside
For Integration State Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP), all of the critics’ fears that this is a large quarter through the back door could finally be put to rest. “Even if the current refugee numbers suggest an easing of tensions, we must not forget: the solution lies in a common and strong EU asylum policy, through consistent external border protection, reception centers at the external borders and agreements for rapid repatriation with countries of origin. We can no longer leave immigration to chance,” says Hattmannsdorfer.

Raml: “Asylum quarters were a mistake”
Linz City Councilor for Security Michael Raml (FP) describes the asylum quarters in the former IBIS as a “mistake from the start.” The concerns of neighbors and residents would not have been taken into account when choosing the location. Raml appeals to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and the BBU to also say goodbye to the plans surrounding the former ÖBB apprentices’ home and not to accommodate 150 asylum seekers there. However, as the OÖN has reported several times, the area in question has not yet been used. Since the rental agreement there also expires at the end of the year, nothing is likely to change.
