The National Union of Workers and Transport Workers (Unott) resolved a general strike transport for Friday, October 27.
The force measure announced this Monday by the union will be 24 hours (from 00:00) in a show of support for the salary demands of the suburban sector. In addition to the strike, the transport union will hold a march towards the Executive Tower.
Last October 10, from 3 in the morning, the Suburban Transport Workers Federation (FOTS) carried out a general strike of suburban buses for 24 hours in the metropolitan area. FOTS is made up of the companies Casanova, Cita, Copsa and Tala Pando Montevideo.
The conflict arose from breaches of the last salary agreement agreed with the companies in the sector itself. Now, the Unott Executive Board decided to start a series of mobilizations starting on Friday, October 20, as a protest.
“The workers of the transport in the suburban sector have been suffering in recent months from a systematic attack on their salary and working conditions,” states Unott in the official statement of the general strike.
Likewise, it is noted that “it is known by national and departmental authorities, and by public opinion”, that the companies should have made effective the salary increase corresponding to the agreement in force as of June 1, and that “instead of complying with that obligation they have dedicated themselves to looking for pretexts”.
Unott accused the Executive Branch of omission in the suburban transportation conflict
At the same time, they maintain that the actions of the companies are being protected “by the inaction and permissiveness of a Executive power absolutely opaque and lacking resolution to enforce the rights of said workers.
“Since September 2, passengers have been paying their tickets daily with an increase of 6.58%, but companies are not paying the corresponding salary to their workers,” the Unott statement noted.
