There will be no shortage of potatoes in the HLW Bad Ischl school kitchen in the near future. Third year students were able to harvest almost 60 kilograms on the Katrin in the past few days.
It was the result of a sustainability project that was started on Ischl’s local mountain in May of this year together with potato ambassador Ulrike Haunschmid and Johannes Aldrian, managing director of the Katrin cable car. Potatoes were grown in a pyramid shape above the mountain station; parallel to what was happening on the mountain, various topics relating to the crop were covered in lessons across subjects such as sustainability management, nutrition, food technology and kitchen management. After just a few weeks, it became clear that the attempt was not going to be an unsuccessful one: the white germs grew into strong shoots and formed green leaves.
At a harvest festival, some of the harvested potatoes were cooked together with the hut owners on the Katrin zu Pinzgauer Nidei, the rest is used in the kitchen of the mountain inn and in the alpine hut.
