One “green surroundings” with parks and ponds promotes mental health. What sounds plausible has been proven over the long term by British scientists with Viennese and Spanish experts as co-authors. The closer you are to nature, the less common depression or anxiety disorders are, the experts have now published in “Lancet Planetary Health”.
“Living in greener areas or closer to green or blue zones such as parks, lakes, ponds or ocean beaches is associated with better mental health”wrote Rebecca Geary from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Public Health.
“However, there has so far been less evidence of the long-term effect on later diagnoses. We therefore attempted to determine the effect of living or moving to natural regions or access to such zones on the mental health of adults over a certain period of time.”
The scientists examined the health data of 2,341,591 million people in Wales over the age of 16 and over the period from January 1, 2008 to October 31, 2019. The results were clear: “After adjusting for other factors, an increase of one-tenth of a point on the EVI scale was associated with a lower frequency of common mental illnesses (treated or untreated) at the current time or in the previous year”the authors wrote.
Plan for more greenery and nature
The further the distance from the place of residence to a park, lake, pond, seashore or green or blue zone, the more frequently mental disorders occurred. Proximity to green oases in the local living environment had the best effect on those who would otherwise be most disadvantaged.
According to the scientists, this should give urban planners and politicians in particular food for thought – towards more greenery and nature for people’s health.
