The Gmunden Youth Council will not be a one-off event. In mid-May of this year, randomly selected people from Gmund between the ages of 14 and 19 came together to discuss a new format for young people’s political participation.

Guidelines were drawn up over the summer holidays, and the local council gave them the green light on Monday evening: A core team consisting of five people will be allowed to introduce agenda items to the youth committee in the future. However, there is no right to vote. At the invitation of the chair, the youth council, which is supposed to meet quarterly, can take part in all committees and also in the local council.
This is how the election works
All young people between the ages of 13 and 21 with their main residence in Gmunden can be nominated for the core team. “But it shouldn’t become a playing field for party politics,” says Deputy Mayor Ulrike Feichtinger (Greens). That is why the members of the core team must not be involved in party politics. The election – in which all young people between the ages of 13 and 21 with their main residence in Gmunden can also take part – will take place online; the municipality will actively write to young people to draw attention to the new opportunities. Mayor Stefan Krapf (VP) is also pleased about this positive development. From 2024, a youth council will also represent the concerns of young people in Bad Ischl.
