The Lower Austrians lost the second round qualifying second leg against Valur Reykjavik in the NV Arena on Wednesday 0-1 (0-0), but rose confidently after the clear 4-0 win in Iceland. Which opponents await Captain Jennifer Klein and Co. will be decided on Friday (1 p.m.) in Nyon.

In front of only 948 spectators, Lise Dissing (75th) ensured that St. Pölten did not win for the first time in the tenth competitive game of the season. That was too much to bear. The climb is also financially worthwhile. There is 100,000 euros for advancing, followed by an additional 400,000 euros in entry fee. For every win in the group phase there is a bonus of 50,000 euros, for a draw there is another 17,000 euros. At the premiere in 2022, St. Pölten finished third with four points and therefore missed out on a place in the quarter-finals.

St. Pölten started with the same starting formation as in the first game, but the Icelanders were forced to play forward due to the difficult starting position. The guests had more of the game in the early stages, but didn’t make the final pass. So it was the hosts who were more dangerous, first of all through Sarah Mattner-Trembleau (10th) and Valentina Mädl (16th).

After a little less than half an hour there was a setback when Klein had to leave the field due to dizziness. That’s why Isabelle Meyer, who was recently also not completely fit, had to be traded in earlier than planned. The defense didn’t allow much. Mädl should have taken the lead at the front, but failed after Mikolajova’s running pass to Fanney Birkisdottir (30′). She later made a mistake with a Zver long-range shot, but was just able to correct her mistake in the follow-up (42′).

The Icelanders only came very close to scoring shortly before half-time when Bryndis Arna Nielsdottir missed the goal from a good position (45′). Even after the restart there were no fireworks of opportunities. Zver shot over (61′), on the other hand Carina Schlüter had to show her skills for the first time with a Frank header (64′). Eleven minutes later they were beaten when Dissing finished cold after a Nielsdottir pass. This time, the Brancao team was spared a shaky game like the one in the 2022 play-off against Kuopio, where promotion was only secured late in extra time.

Some ÖFB team players who did not work for St. Pölten also made it into the group phase. Barbara Dunst showed a gala performance during Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-0 win at Sparta Prague. The offensive player scored a flawless hat trick before the break (18th, 33rd, 43rd). Verena Hanshaw was also in the starting line-up, in contrast to Virginia Kirchberger, who was missing from the squad. The Germans had already won the first leg 5-0. Laura Feiersinger celebrated a 6-1 win with AS Roma against the Ukrainian representative Vorskla and rose to 9-1 overall.

However, Viktoria Pinther was eliminated in the FC Zurich dress against Ajax Amsterdam. VfL Wolfsburg, the finalist from the last edition who failed at Paris FC, is no longer represented in the competition.
