“Social Impact Award” for two JKU teams

“Social Impact Award” for two JKU teams

“Update Social” took place for the first time at the Johannes Kepler University Linz in the spring. Within two days, students developed numerous innovative business ideas for the social sector – two teams have now been awarded the “Social Impact Award”.

This is awarded annually in several countries by an international jury for innovative product ideas. “We are very pleased that two JKU projects were recognized after the first edition of Update Social,” says Stefanie Lebert, who coordinates the event.

One of the award-winning projects is the “PflegeZeit” app. The “Artificial Intelligence” students Jakob Kreuther and Alexander Loidl are working with Lisa Mahler to develop an app that takes care of everyday planning for nursing staff in retirement homes. “Artificial intelligence is used to suggest activities that are tailored to the needs of individual patients,” says Loidl. This is intended to make everyday work easier for nursing staff.

In the first step, the app will include the function of making music suggestions and a planning tool. “Music can help temporarily reduce the symptoms of dementia. From there, we collect data in order to be able to make suggestions for activities in the long term,” says Loidl. The team is investing the 3,500 euros in prize money in further development; a prototype will be available next fall.

The second project is “INDIMA”. The online platform is intended to compare migrants’ qualifications – for example in nursing – with Austrian requirement profiles. “The authorities can use this, for example, as a preliminary screening in nostrification processes,” says co-founder Emin Vojnikovic. There are currently 2.4 million highly qualified but unemployed immigrants in the EU. “We have a small prototype and we want to present a finished product in the summer of 2024,” announces the student.
