“Digitalization permeates all areas of our lives. That’s why it is an immense advantage if children of primary school age deal with the digital world, but in a structured manner,” says TIC managing director Daniela Zeiner.
The CoderDojo programming club has been offering this “structure” to children and young people aged 7 to 17 for five years now. It was started back then by initiator Maria Pernegger together with the TIC Steyr, the Museum Arbeitswelt (MAW) and the Steyr-Werke association. Today, Friday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the free project for technical talent is celebrating its anniversary at the MAW with a varied afternoon of technology.
“For four hours, the children can immerse themselves in different areas of technology in workshops and open stations and visit information stands from our cooperation partners apprentigo, WerndlExplorer and ESERO,” says Pernegger.

With the exception of the “Filming and editing video” workshop, which takes place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the workshops take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. Here the children can playfully program mini-games, edit images with Gimp, make LEDs light up with micro:bits and program controls as well as build and program Lego. At the open stations, children can solder flashlights, assemble extension cables, immerse themselves in virtual reality, explore 3D printing and experience how computers can recognize facial features and track gaze and what the technology of facial expression analysis and the “Eye Tracking” is useful.
One of the highlights will be the “Dismantling Computers” station from NKE Austria. Participants can explore the inner workings of a computer and find out which hardware components are necessary to be able to work and program a computer. NKE managing director Matthias Ortner raves about the project: “I think it makes sense to get children excited about technology, both for the hardware and the software. This understanding will be helpful in later professional life.”
The fact that CoderDojo was an important companion for some talented people is shown by the success of long-term participants: The sisters Claudia (18), Johanna (15) and Verena (13) Straßer, together with their cousin Marlene Reitner (15), now a mentor herself, have this year Won first place at the Austria-wide Youth Hackathon.
