There couldn’t have been a more historic opponent for today’s 20th stadium anniversary of SV Guntamatic Ried: First Vienna FC, the oldest football club in Austria, founded in 1894, is playing in the Innviertel in the home game of the 2nd football league. It is still uncertain whether there will be a reunion with ex-Ried striker Christoph Monschein: the 30-year-old’s appearance is questionable due to a cold.
“I don’t want to say too much about Ried,” Monschein initially kept a low profile when asked by OÖN before today’s duel. And yet he gave insight into why Ried was relegated at the end of the previous season: “With the existing squad, it was difficult to implement the coach’s system.” However, he only has positive words for Ried coach Maximilian Senft: “I’ve known him for a long time, he’s doing a good job.” However, he sees Vienna in a better position in a certain area: “In terms of play, Vienna is better than Ried.”
A reckoning with the club that glorified him as a great beacon of hope at the time of his transfer in the summer of 2022, but for which he was ultimately the bogeyman for many, looks different. One reason for this is that Monschein has learned from his past: After moving to the Innviertel, he sued his former club LASK because they had withheld 30,000 euros of the advance payment agreed upon when transferring to the Vikings. According to the LASK, Monschein had expressed too negatively about his past with the Black and Whites. The Linz Higher Regional Court rejected LASK’s appeal in the “Causa Monschein” at the end of August, thus ruling that the striker was right.
Continue the home series
Even if Monschein doesn’t want any bad blood with Ried, it was probably the right decision to part ways in the summer. The ex-international really blossomed again at Vienna, scoring seven goals in twelve competitive games. “I’m happy to be back home in Vienna. The club has big goals and I want to be part of this story.” His former club has also set a return to the top flight as a goal. The unbeaten home series should continue in the anniversary game: “It is extremely important for us that we become a home power again. We now have two home games in a row, so we want to continue our winning streak,” says Ried goalie Andreas Leitner.
