The collective bargaining negotiations for commercial employees are usually overshadowed by the metal workers’ negotiations and take place with less public fanfare. Because the economic situation is tense in many retail sectors, the struggle for a significant increase in salaries could be tougher than usual this year.

From October 2022 to September 2023, inflation was 9.2 percent, which is the basis for the negotiations. Due to high inflation, there is a need for “a fair and permanent increase in salaries and apprentice compensation,” said union chief negotiator Helga Fichtinger from the GPA. Economically flourishing companies could also pay out a tax-free one-off bonus, the GPA representative told journalists in Vienna on Thursday evening.

It starts on Tuesday. Four dates are scheduled until the end of November. Because trade is suffering due to the recessionary development and many industries would lose sales if prices rise, trade chairman Rainer Trefelik cannot imagine a high degree. He said on Friday that he lacked the imagination.
